Not an official warning service

MeteoKite shows automatically processed model and radar data. Where a national weather service publishes its warnings for reuse — currently the Deutscher Wetterdienst for Germany — MeteoKite shows those official warnings unchanged and credited; it does not issue warnings itself. Elsewhere, its “model alerts” are computed automatically by MeteoKite from the NOAA GFS forecast; they are not official weather warnings and are not issued, checked or endorsed by any national weather service or authority. A model alert can be wrong, late or missing: the absence of a model alert does not mean the weather is safe. For official warnings and for decisions that affect safety, always follow your national weather service and local authorities:

  • Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) — Germany
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) — India
  • US National Weather Service — United States
  • MeteoAlarm (national weather services of Europe) — Europe
  • WMO Severe Weather Information Centre — worldwide

1. What the site shows

Model alerts. MeteoKite flags heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong wind, snow and ice, heat and cold where the GFS forecast for a model cell (about 25 km) crosses fixed thresholds. They inherit the model’s errors and its coarse grid, are not reviewed by a forecaster, and use their own four levels, which do not correspond to the levels of any official warning system. The banner shows the model alerts at your location if you have allowed location access, otherwise those in the country of your device’s time zone; it may therefore show alerts for a place you are not in, or none for where you are. In Japan, MeteoKite shows no model alerts (only the Japan Meteorological Agency may issue warnings there).

Forecasts are output of the NOAA Global Forecast System (GFS), a numerical weather model, for the nearest grid point (about 25 km); they are not observations and are not checked by a meteorologist. Forecasts become less reliable further ahead — beyond about 7–10 days they show trends at best. Radar images are measurements of the Deutscher Wetterdienst, automatically corrected and combined by MeteoKite; they can contain artefacts and gaps. Data may be delayed, incomplete or unavailable.

Trial forecasts. The “WRF” model on the weather map is an experimental model run produced by the MeteoKite team. It is offered for information and evaluation only, has not been officially validated and may differ significantly from actual weather. It must not be used for decisions concerning safety, health, property, travel or business; consult the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or your national meteorological service for official forecasts and warnings.

2. Use

The site is free to use for personal information. Automated mass retrieval (scraping) of pages or data interfaces, and any use that impairs the service for others, is not permitted. The weather and map data remain subject to their providers’ licences — see data sources & licences.

2a. Embedding MeteoKite on your website

You may embed MeteoKite maps and forecasts on your website free of charge, using the code from the “Embed” dialog, without changing them.

  • Keep the MeteoKite credit, the data credits and the link back to MeteoKite visible; do not hide, crop or cover the embed.
  • Do not suggest that MeteoKite endorses your website, product or service.
  • Forecasts are model output and can be wrong; the weather disclaimer above applies to embeds as well.
  • We may change, limit or stop embeds at any time, for example if an embed causes very many requests.

3. No warranty and liability

The information is provided without warranty as to accuracy, completeness, timeliness or availability. We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence and for injury to life, body or health. For slight negligence we are liable only for the breach of an essential obligation, limited to the damage typically foreseeable; otherwise liability for slight negligence is excluded. Mandatory statutory liability (e.g. under product liability law) remains unaffected.

4. External links

Links to other websites are provided for convenience; their operators are responsible for their content.

5. Changes and applicable law

We may change these terms and the service at any time. The law of the operator’s country of establishment applies (see the legal notice), without prejudice to mandatory consumer protection rules of the country where you live.
